Explained: Why BTS Fans and Netizens Are Criticising RM and J-Hope Over Usher and Chris Brown

BTS have one of the most fiercely loyal fandoms in global pop culture, but being an ARMY does not necessarily mean defending the group at all costs. Over the years, sections of the fandom have also publicly called out the members over their associations, brand choices and perceived silence on issues they believe matter.

That conversation resurfaced after Kim Namjoon (RM) and Jung Hoseok (J-Hope) were seen at Usher and Chris Brown's concert in Toronto. The two BTS members attended The R&B Tour, Usher and Chris Brown's joint 2026 stadium tour, which stopped in Toronto on August 11 and 12. J-Hope also shared moments from the concert on Instagram, while photos of RM and J-Hope meeting Usher and later appearing with Chris Brown circulated online.

The reaction was swift, with some fans questioning why the BTS members would publicly associate themselves with artists who have faced serious controversies. But why exactly has this particular appearance become such a talking point?

Why are BTS fans angry?

At the centre of the backlash are Usher's connection to Sean 'Diddy' Combs and Chris Brown's history of violence and legal controversies.

Usher has a longstanding professional and personal connection with Combs. He was signed to LaFace Records as a teenager, but was later sent to New York to live with Combs, who became an early mentor. Combs also served as co-executive producer on Usher's 1994 debut album. Usher has spoken about that period several times over the years, including describing his experience of living with Combs as “pretty wild.”

The issue became particularly sensitive this year because of Usher's comments about Combs following the latter's criminal conviction. In a March 2026 interview with Forbes, Usher was asked about his former mentor and said he had “nothing negative to say” about Combs because his personal experience was different from what the public had seen. He praised Combs' influence on hip-hop and Black entrepreneurship, described him as a mentor and said, “that's why I see him as legacy.” He also added, “I put respect on his name.”

That statement came after Combs' federal trial. In July 2025, Combs was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex-trafficking charges but was convicted on two counts of transporting people across state lines for prostitution. He was subsequently sentenced to 50 months in prison.

For critics, therefore, the issue is not simply that BTS attended an Usher concert. It is that the concert's headliner had recently and publicly defended Combs' legacy, despite the criminal case and conviction.

Then came Chris Brown.

The controversy became even bigger because The R&B Tour is not just an Usher tour. It is a joint stadium tour featuring Usher and Chris Brown. Brown has faced serious controversy throughout his career, most notably his 2009 assault of his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He pleaded guilty to one felony count of assault and was sentenced to five years of probation and community labour.

In 2014, Brown pleaded guilty to a separate misdemeanour assault charge involving a man outside a Washington hotel. In July 2026, he pleaded guilty in the UK to affray relating to a 2023 nightclub incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw. More serious assault charges were dropped after the plea, and Brown is due to be sentenced in October.

That history is why images of RM and J-Hope with Brown sparked particularly strong reactions online.

Netizens' Reactions

One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “Of course they’re friends with that woman beater & assaulter. Horrid men ew.” Others questioned why BTS members, particularly given the group's history of messages around self-worth and empowerment, would publicly associate with Brown and Usher.

Not to mention Zionists."

Another user pointed towards their 'perfectly curated image' and expressed, "No I mean seriously, this has been a rough week as an army..bts were getting so praised for their grammy boycott decision and then gemini collab and chris brown concert happened within a week..bts' 'woke' image curated by Bang PD has been long since over...i always knew they never really were 'activists and feminists' and it was just their +ve marketing but this is genuinely disappointing (sic)"

Some ARMYs, however, pointed out that the BTS members are being criticised more than the offenders. Others have pointed out that the entertainment industry continues to work with Brown despite his history, making the issue considerably bigger than BTS alone.

Why is this hitting BTS particularly hard?

Part of the answer lies in BTS' own image and the expectations surrounding them. The group has built a global identity around messages of self-love, youth, emotional vulnerability and empowerment.

A couple of years ago, Pixel Project, a non-profilt organization had named Namjoon among 16 Make Role Models Helping to Stop Violence Against Women. The band leader also calls himself a feminist and had enrolled in women and gender studies courses after some of his early lyrics were called out for being misogynistic. That has made some fans particularly sensitive to associations they see as contradicting those values.

The criticism has also been amplified because BTS' fandom is not monolithic. While a section of ARMY will defend the members against almost any criticism, another section has become increasingly vocal about holding them accountable.

This is not the first time they have faced criticism from their fandom. The South Korean boy band have previously faced criticism from fans and netizens over their perceived silence on the Israel-Gaza war and their associations with companies and public figures that some supporters view as connected to Israel.

In May 2024, BTS were included in the #Blockout2024 campaign, an online movement that called for celebrities perceived as silent on Gaza to be blocked or unfollowed. The backlash also produced a debate within ARMY itself. Some fans argued that BTS should use their platform to speak about Palestine, while others defended the members and pointed to their military service at the time, as well as the distinction between BTS and decisions made by their agency, HYBE.

In 2025, V faced backlash after becoming the face of a Coca-Cola campaign in South Korea. The criticism came from fans participating in or sympathetic to boycotts of the company over its perceived links to Israel.

Some fans defended the singer by pointing out that Coca-Cola Korea is operated locally by LG Household & Health Care and arguing that V's endorsement should not automatically be interpreted as political support.

Jungkook and Starbucks

Jungkook has faced similar criticism over Starbucks. Starbucks became one of the brands targeted by pro-Palestinian boycott campaigns after the company took legal action against Starbucks Workers United following a social-media post expressing solidarity with Palestine. Starbucks has maintained that it does not provide financial support to the Israeli government or military and has said that claims suggesting otherwise are false.

Nevertheless, the controversy became part of the wider consumer boycott movement, particularly in countries where support for Palestine was strong. When Jungkook was seen with Starbucks, some fans criticised him for appearing to ignore the boycott. The same larger debate resurfaced repeatedly: should BTS members be expected to research the political and corporate histories of every brand they use or endorse, particularly given their enormous global reach?

So, what is the BTS controversy really about?

The latest backlash is ultimately less about one concert than it is about what fans believe BTS should represent.

For some, RM and J-Hope attending a concert featuring Usher and Chris Brown is simply two musicians enjoying music and meeting artists they admire. For others, the public nature of the appearance, the photos with Brown and Usher's recent defence of Diddy make the association uncomfortable.

And because BTS have spent years cultivating a relationship with their audience that goes far beyond music, some fans believe that relationship comes with a certain degree of accountability.
