Diljit Dosanjh Joins Shabana Azmi Huma Qureshi in Supporting Students After Delhi Protest

Diljit Dosanjh has spoken out in support of the students participating in the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) ongoing protests. His statement comes weeks after he was asked about the demonstrations in Delhi, when he had maintained that, as an artiste, he did not wish to comment on politics.

On Monday, July 20, thousands of students and supporters gathered in Delhi for the CJP's Sansad Chalo march. The protest was organised to demand accountability over alleged examination paper leaks and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The march turned chaotic after clashes broke out between protesters and police. Videos from the scene showed police using batons and tear gas to disperse sections of the crowd.

Several public figures have since reacted to the developments. Diljit was among the latest to voice his support.

Taking to Instagram Stories, the actor-singer wrote in Punjabi, "Aj Jo Hoyea Baut Maada Hoyea.. Students Naal Edan Treat Nhi Hona Chaida c.. Mai Authorities Nu Request Karda Ke Students Dian Demands Nu Sunn Leya Javey.. Lokan Di Avaaz Rab Di Avaaz Hundi Aa..." (What happened today was very wrong. Students should not have been treated like this. I request the authorities to listen to the students' demands. The voice of the people is the voice of God.)

Diljit also reflected on his experience during the farmers' protest, recalling the criticism he faced for publicly supporting the movement.

He continued, "Mere Te Already Anti Nationalist Da Tag Baut Vaar Lagg Chuka.. Hun V Mainu Anti-nationalist Keha Jaega. After Kisan Protest.. I faced a Lot of Backlash & Legal Problems which I can't Even Discuss.. BAKI RAB SAB DEKH REHA, BABA BHALLI KARU." (I have already been labelled an 'anti-national' many times. Even now, I know I will be called anti-national again. After the farmers' protest, I faced a lot of backlash and legal problems that I still cannot even discuss. The rest, God is watching everything. May Baba bless everyone.)

Diljit is not the only celebrity to have reacted to the protests. Veteran actors Shabana Azmi and Prakash Raj were present at Jantar Mantar on July 20 and shared updates from the protest site on social media. Singer-composer Vishal Dadlani also condemned the police action and used his social media platforms to amplify information about the demonstrations.

Actor Huma Qureshi expressed her concern over the visuals emerging from the protest. She wrote, "The visuals from today will stay with me for a very long time. Seeing peaceful protesters being met with such brute force and lathis left me with a deep sense of sadness. This surely could have been handled with more patience, more listening, and more dialogue."

Actors Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia Deshmukh, Aditi Rao Hydari and Dia Mirza also also extended their support to the students.

Bhumi Pednekar, meanwhile, called for dialogue over violence, writing, "We saw visuals of violence today. We owe it to the youth of our country to ensure that this movement doesn't resort to violence or go off track. Democracies are built on dialogue."

The CJP movement began as a youth-led campaign demanding reforms in India's examination system after a series of alleged paper leak controversies. Over the past few weeks, it has grown into a nationwide movement, with students calling for greater accountability and structural reforms in the education system. Monday's Sansad Chalo march became the movement's biggest mobilisation yet, drawing thousands to Delhi and triggering widespread debate after clashes between protesters and police.
