I don’t have any such thing as a first or last memory. She was like a sister to me. I remember breaking down in the lift at Jaslok Hospital when she passed away. She had helped so much during the industry strike that led to the Hope 86 programme.
We did a few films together, maybe five or six, including Dilwaala, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki and Dance Dance. She was pregnant during the shooting of Dance Dance, and I would tell the choreographer and director to make things as easy for her as possible. When she told me she was pregnant, I told her to do what she thought was right. Sure enough, she got married to Raj (Babbar).
It’s not for me to comment on her personal life. But she confided in me a lot, and I would hear her out. I knew what she was going through, including her low phases. I also told her about whatever I was going through, and she listened patiently, without any judgement. Sometimes, things are beyond the heart and mind. Once she had made up her mind, she went ahead and did what she thought was right. Who am I to judge any decision? Dil pe koi kaabu nahi hota. Mann pe koi kaabu nahi hota. Some things have their own logic.
