Allu Arjun’s most-watched collaboration in years is inching closer to its big reveal, and Filmfare has learnt exclusively that the look Lokesh Kanagaraj is building for him may be the most ambitious transformation of the actor’s career yet.
A source close to the production reveals, “Allu Arjun will have a completely different and unique look in AA23 with Lokesh Kanagaraj. Both AA and Lokesh have spent a lot of time in researching and exploring different looks, as they are known for pushing boundaries and bringing their characters to life with complete conviction. They wanted to make sure this look feels fresh and unlike anything audiences have seen from Allu Arjun before and at the same time truly represent the character they want to showcase. AA23 is set to surprise the audience in a big way and this look is going to become iconic.”
The anticipation has been building for a while now. AA23, also referred to as LK07, Lokesh’s seventh film as director has been trending since its announcement, when the “23 Theme” video crossed a million Instagram reels within days of release. The film reunites Allu Arjun with Mythri Movie Makers, his production partner on the Pushpa franchise, and brings Anirudh Ravichander on board for his first-ever collaboration with the star. It’s also Lokesh’s first Telugu film and the first time he’s directing Allu Arjun, new territory for a filmmaker who has built his entire reputation within Tamil cinema. A trial shoot has reportedly already taken place in Mumbai, and word is that a BTS glimpse from Allu Arjun’s look test is edited and waiting on the actor’s final approval before release.
Sharp-eyed fans will remember the announcement teaser had Allu Arjun in a silver kada, a motif that’s followed Lokesh’s heroes across his films. Whether that carries through to the final look or was simply a placeholder for the reveal is still under wraps, but it’s exactly this kind of detail that has fans combing through every frame for clues.
Allu Arjun has never treated a look as just costume and makeup. Arya’s campus-hero charm, Pushpa’s sun-scorched, slouch-shouldered smuggler with his half-grown beard and sandalwood-soaked drawl, and now the beast-like avatar he’s sporting for Atlee’s Raaka. Each has come with its own physicality, its own walk and voice, built from the ground up rather than layered on top of a performance. It’s part of why every new Allu Arjun reveal turns into a moment: audiences aren’t just seeing a poster, they’re meeting a new person.
Lokesh, for his part, has spent the better part of a decade doing exactly this for Tamil cinema’s biggest stars with Karthi’s Dilli in Kaithi, Vijay’s dual-shaded turns in Master and Leo, Kamal Haasan’s black-ops veteran in Vikram, and most recently, Rajinikanth’s Deva in Coolie. Each has become inseparable from the actor who played him, stitched together into what’s now known as the Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Handing that same instinct to a Telugu superstar for the first time is a genuine departure, and if the buzz around this project is any indication, it’s one both men are taking seriously.
