The film industry is a heady mix of high creativity and volatile business scenarios. In either case, situations can change in an instant and so can the people's outlook. Something similar happened with the release of Batwara 1947 where Aamir Khan was the producer and Sunny Deol played the lead role. The two stars had come together after many years and this was, in effect, their first real professional collaboration. But, the film was delayed for several reasons and over the waiting period, enough transpired that Sunny and Aamir developed serious disagreements and ended up being miffed at each other.
Business decisions affected the collaboration
The story started off with Batwara 1947's release prep which started back in 2025. The film's release date was pushed from January 2025 to June 2025 and then pushed even further as some scenes needed to be reshot and producer Aamir Khan was formulating an ideal release strategy. Sunny Deol was fresh off the success of Gadar 2, which had broken multiple box office records and had put wind back in the sails of Sunny's career. His next release Jaat, had also performed moderately well at the box office so there was a buzz around Sunny's films. Our source tells us, "It was then, that a major OTT platform offered 60+ crores for the rights of Batwara 1947, which was called Lahore 1947 back then. Sunny and Aamir had a business agreement that Sunny would get 50 percent share of the film's profits. So a haul of Rs 60 crores was a business deal that Sunny was very excited about. But Aamir, was thinking of other avenues and aspects."

Aamir Khan was overseeing the release of Sitaare Zameen Par at this time and he was toying with the ideas of a YouTube release that would kickstart the pay-per-view or video-on-demand subscription model in India. Taking a commercial and creative risk, Aamir turned down the lucrative 60-crore offer in search of more modern venture ideas. Our source chimes in, "Sunny didn't like that decision, more so in hindsight now, since Batwara 1947 has failed to drum up the numbers at the box office and it's OTT rights are being valued at Rs 30 crores."
A steep drop of 50 percent in profits affects Sunny Deol's haul and that's why he and producer Aamir Khan have been at loggerheads during the film's release window.
Professionalism still won
Despite their personal differences, neither star was unprofessional. During Batwara 1947's release weeks both Aamir and Sunny appeared on multiple public platforms to promote the film. They even appeared together on an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, talking about their first association when Sunny Deol was the star of a movie where Aamir's uncle and father were producers and he was an assistant director.
Despite positive reviews the audience word-of-mouth for Batwara 1947 has paled in comparison to the recent Dhurandhar films and its direct competitor Awarapan 2, featuring Emraan Hashmi. All of this has resulted in Batwara losing steam and crucial money. But as always, these stories remain behind the curtain and only bits and pieces of the truth comes out. Filmfare wishes that Sunny and Aamir come together again and create more compelling cinema like Batwara 1947 and not let the pitfalls of money stop the creative synergy.
