SS Rajamouli’s ambitious upcoming spectacle Varanasi has been generating steady buzz ever since it went on floors, and fresh reports about its scale have now placed the spotlight firmly on its budget. Headlined by Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film is already deep into production and shaping up to be one of the most expensive Indian cinematic ventures mounted to date.
According to industry estimates cited in international coverage profiling Priyanka Chopra, the project is said to carry a production cost of approximately Rs 1,400 crore, or about $150 million. While the figure underlines Rajamouli’s reputation for delivering visually grand epics, it also highlights how the global entertainment economy measures scale differently, especially when compared to high-end streaming productions.
Interestingly, Chopra’s previous outing, the Prime Video spy thriller Citadel, reportedly operated on a significantly larger financial canvas. Season one of the Russo Brothers-backed series is estimated to have cost around $300 million, nearly double the budget of Varanasi. Spread across six episodes, the show reportedly commanded close to $50 million per episode, placing it among the most expensive television productions ever made and just below the per-episode scale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
Despite the comparison, Varanasi carries importance beyond numbers, as it marks Priyanka Chopra’s return to Indian cinema following her extended Hollywood run. Plot details remain tightly guarded, but the film is described as a sweeping time-travel adventure blending mythology and spectacle. One of its most talked-about segments is an elaborate 25-minute battle sequence inspired by the Ramayana, underscoring the project’s visual ambition.
Meanwhile, attention also remains on the future of Citadel, whose second season is still awaiting release amid the Russo Brothers’ busy schedule. With both projects representing distinct storytelling ecosystems, the global icon continues to bridge global and Indian screens, navigating two vastly different scales of cinematic storytelling simultaneously.
