Exclusive: âœA Woman Can Be Powerful In Her Silence - Akshay Oberoi

Akshay Oberoi made his debut with Rajshree productions Isi Life Mein (2010). His films Fighter, Ghuspaithiya(2024) and web series like Illegal and The Broken News have cemented his position in the industry. In an exclusive chat with Filmfare, Akshay spoke about the strength of women and how her wife supported him to fulfil his dream.
Who is the most inspiring woman in your life and what makes her special?
The most inspiring woman in my life is my wife, Jyothi Vynatheya. There's a lot that I've learnt from watching her grow in her own career, being a mother, being a friend and being a daughter to her parents. So just watching her equations with people or the way she interacts with people has taught me a lot and made me reflect on how I interact with people. Her softness with her parents and maturity at work. I don't think that the male species would behave that way. Men are just very different.
How has a woman influenced your career or your personal growth?
Again, my wife. Very early on, I always believed in myself which is why I even made it this far in my career. My wife did very well in high school. She went to a great college, got a great job and she did all the right things. My profession was very different. Acting is one of the most difficult professions to make a career out of, to earn a living out of. But she always believed in me. She never asked any questions. Her quiet confidence in me made me survive. I pushed through all the difficulties and continue to, because I know when I go to bed at night, the woman lying next to me thinks that tomorrow he's going to wake up and achieve everything he wants. I think only a woman can give you that. I don't know men have that kind of strength.

What is the greatest life lesson you learned from a woman in your life?
It's their sensitivity with strength. So, women can be very powerful, but they do it in a very sensitive way. Men do it in a way that's very showy. A woman can be powerful in her silence. I think that's something that men should learn from.
Can you recall a moment when a woman's resilience or kindness changed your perspective?
I come from a hardcore Punjabi household and the men are very dominating in our households. But I've seen my chachi, married to a very dominating, powerful, successful and a very intelligent man. But in her pauses and in her silences, she makes him see, the right way to do something or the right way to parent or the right way to behave with friends. I've seen it many times over that it made an imprint on my own mind. I learnt that the silences speak more than words.
What's the message would you like to share with your female fans on women's day?
It's very difficult to get a woman's attention but It's very easy to get a man's attention. Women have a certain level of criteria, depth or security or something before they give you that kind of love. Once they give it to you, the outpouring and strength of that love is far more than a man can give you. But it's harder to gain. So, my only message to any female fans I have is a deep gratitude from within because I know they mean it and it's not fleeting.

What changes would you like to see in society to support and uplift women more?
I think we've made a lot of progress in the last few decades. Of course, there's a long way to go. I would like to see women in the workforce more within India. I love having women on my team because I always find women are harder working, better planned, more logical, more practical, better at controlling their own temperament. Imagine if women were the heads of state all over the world, we'd have less wars. I would just like to see women in positions of power more.
