Kuch Kuch Hota Hai has now completed 21 years after release. Yes, while it does make us feel really old now, we also realise that the film still holds a very special place in all our hearts even after this long. And there are many reasons why the film is so special for us. In fact, it is impossible to put a finger on what you like most about the film simply because there is so much to like. For starters, it featured one of Bollywood’s most iconic on screen pairs in Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, a brilliant performance from Rani Mukerji, Karan Johar’s stunning visuals, Salman Khan’s cameo and some pretty iconic characters amongst others reasons. And, along with all the singing and dancing, we also learnt some serious life lessons about love, friendships and relationships in general. So, as we celebrate another anniversary of this super special film, we wanted to list some of our top reasons why we love Kuch Kuch Hota Hai so much. Check it out.
Karan Johar
Today, Karan Johar without a doubt is regarded as one of the best in the industry when it comes to directors. The best part about his direction is that he takes you into a whole new world. Over the years, he’s developed a signature style of storytelling which we’ve grown to love. But, 21 years ago at the time of the film’s release, he was a nobody.
However, as soon as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai hit the screens, we knew a star is born. Even though this was his first attempt at being behind the camera, not for a second he let you feel that. The way he presented his story, characters… everything seemed so mature and instantly formed a connect with the audience. Yes, the actors did a great job and there’s no denying that. But, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai would not have been Kuch Kuch Hota Hai if it wasn’t for Karan Johar.
Star Cast
When Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji come together on screen you expect fireworks to go off and with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, we witnessed just that. Well, we have seen many love triangles in Bollywood but this one stood out from the rest and a big credit for that goes to the supremely talented cast of the film. IN the initial half of the film, Shah Rukh Khan played the character of Mr.Charming and in the latter half we saw him as a doting and caring father to his little girl Anjali (Sana Saed).
At this time, Shah Rukh Khan was steadily working his way to the top and with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, he basically secured his title as the ‘King of Romance’. Rani Mukerji too did a splendid job playing the role of the college bombshell. But, the performance that overshadowed everyone had to be Kajol’s portrayal of Anjali. In the two halves of the film, we see two completely different versions of the actor. In the first half, she plays a tomboy who literally does not have any sort of interest in men. But, post interval she becomes the perfect ‘dulhania’.
Music
Everything about this film is iconic and the music is no exception. The songs from the film are still very much fresh in our minds as they simply refuse to age. Even though the composer duo of Jatin-Lalit could not progress with the changing times, their work with this film remains one of Hindi cinema’s finest albums till date.
Be it the title song, Tum Paas Aaye or Ladki Badi Anjani, or that theme tune that has become part of the Dharma Productions logo AV; romance has seldom sounded so melodious.
Relationships
Another fact that we loved about the films is that way it portrayed relationships. Karan Johar once again showed his maturity here as he got everything spot on in this aspect. There are many kinds of relationships in the film that we see and Karan Johar deals with everything tactfully which prevents the film coming off as cheesy or melodramatic. A love triangle alone is a pretty intense plot point to deal with because the fact remains that one character’s heart will be broken no matter what.
And Karan Johar makes you feel Anjali’s pain when she sees the guy she’s head over heels in love with fall for someone else. Karan Johar also nails the father - daughter bond that is shared by Rahul and Anjali. Rahul would go to any extent just to see a smile on his daughter’s face. The daughter too when senses his loneliness sets out with some help from her grandmother to find his long lost friend, Anjali, in hopes that they will reunite and maybe even find love.
The iconic Characters
The film also gave us some iconic characters like Ms. Breganza (Archana Puran Singh), Principal Malhotra (Anupam Kher) and the camp site owner Mr.Malhotra (Jhonny Lever). Even though they had less screen time compared to the leads, they do form an integral part of the film.
Dialogues
Along with a great storyline and some stunning performances, the film also featured many dialogues that were etched in the memories of fans forever. In fact, even today every single Bollywood fans can recite their favourite lines from the film without skipping a beat. Check out some of our favourite ones from the film below.
"Hum ek baar jeete hai, ek baar marte hai, shaadi bhi ek baar hoti hai ... aur pyar ek baar hi hota hai"
"Pyar dosti hai ... agar woh meri sab se achchi dost nahin ban sakti, to main usse kabhi pyar kar hi nahi sakta ... kyun ki dosti bina toh pyar hota hi nahin ... simple, pyar dosti hai"
"Kuch kuch hota hai Rahul, tum nahi samjhoge"
"Jabse tumne pyar ko samjha hai, pyar ko jana hai ... sirf us hi se pyar kiya hai”
"Tussi ja rahe ho? ... tussi na jao"
No “Bad Guys”
Bollywood films always tend to have “Bad Guys”. But in this film, no character had grey shades and in fact it was the situations that caused the problems rather than the people.
Salman Khan
Another special fact about the film is Salman Khan’s cameo which added quite the spark to the film. His role as a gentle and caring man who sacrifices his love just for the sake of his loved one’s happiness is something that really formed a deep connection with the audience.
